Hurricanes are storms that occur in the tropics. In the United States, they appear in areas bordering the Gulf of Mexico and along the East Coast. However, the same kind of storm, when it appears in India and China Sea, is called typhoon. The common name for both disasters is "tropical storm". The area affected by the hurricane usually ranges from 150 to 600 kilometers in diameter, and hurricane winds reach speeds between 100 and 180 kilometers per hour (60 - 112 miles per hour).
