Proper foot care can prevent many foot problems from developing and a person can avoid or moderate such problems as a sprain or an infection by taking several precautions:
1. Avoid walking or running barefoot on cement or other hard surfaces.
2. Do not wear platform or high-heeled shoes for long periods of time.
3. Use foot powders or lotions to avoid recurrence of athlete's foot or other types of foot infections.Diabetics and other persons with poor circulation are especially prone to foot problems, such as infections and ulcers. They should obtain their physicians' advice on the extra care their feet require.
Routine Foot Care
- The feet should be washed at least once a day and you should dry thoroughly between the toes.
- The socks should be changed daily, and it is also advisable to change the type of shoes worn at least once a day.
- Toenails should be kept trimmed straight across, in order to minimize the occurrence of ingrown nails.
- Badly fitting footwear is the major cause of foot problems in modern society. It is important to choose footwear carefully, particularly when buying shoes for children.
- Good shoes give support under the instep and heel and give enough room for the toes to spread inside the shoe.
- When trying on shoes, wear your normal socks or stockings. Try on both shoes and walk around in them. If there is any discomfort, do not buy them.
- Children's feet should be measured regularly since their feet grow quickly and also change shape. The soft bones can be easily deformed by badly fitting shoes.
- Shoes should be discarded when they become too small.
- Shoes mold themselves to the first wearer's feet and should preferably not be handed down from one child to another.
- The choice of materials for footwear is important.
- Shoes should be made of a natural material, such as leather, suede, canvas, or rope.
- Socks should be made of wool or cotton. Synthetic materials do not absorb sweat nor allow it to evaporate.
- A damp foot is vulnerable to infection.
