What is shorthand writing?

Shorthand is a writing method that increases speed and brevity of writing as compared to longhand. Shorthand, simply means fast writing. The shorthand letter is different from the ordinary letter we learn at school.
The process of writing in shorthand is called stenography, from the Greek stenos (narrow) and graphein (to write). 
Shorthand has special characters, consisting of various dashes and characters. Each dash-line has its own meaning. Usually, each line indicates one syllable, and often the whole word. These lines can be written very quickly and so every word of a person who speaks or reads aloud can be recorded.
